It's an old British stage tradition for comics - Music Hall / Panto origin.
Sorta used as a "ok the joke's over - that was the punch line - now laugh" prompt - sorta like the US TV studio "Applause" card or light.... :-)
Really - some of the jokes are that old and bad...
