Probably a 'red petticoat' (which is actually a wool skirt dyed red, usually with 1.5" rings of black velvet around the bottom of it, about six inches and nine inches up). Ballyferriter is in Kerry, and a beautiful place.

Clay pipes were usually smoked during wakes - so very occasionally - rather than the way modern people smoke cigarettes.
