A slight aside here but still relevant: My mother was a devout fundamentalist and there were a good many things that to her mind were just not debatable.

But I have always respected her response to something I said one day, half facetiously.

I said, I tell myself that since every one of the people who have ever lived eventually died, if they can do it, so can I - and then I realize, they couldn't do it, it killed them. Do you see my dilemma?

And she said reflectively, Yes. I see it.

She had put aside her instinctive impulse to 'preach' and actually listened.
