Agreed, but remember that in addition to the breweries, there are the large pub chains that now own a large proportion of UK pubs. These are just as bad as the breweries from the profiteering viewpoint.

Pubs are a valuable asset to a community, expecially in rural areas, and they are closing at an unprecedented rate thanks to the owners (breweries or pub chains) demanding ever higher profits and rents from the tenants and managers, with the result that many pubs have gone to the wall and the properties sold off for housing, leaving many villages without a pub.
