Slavery increased for a while under Charlemagne, as he enslaved the pagans who did not convert to Christianity (and who he didn't kill because of it).

The last manumissions of slaves in Sweden date from the 14th Century.

I really don't think that Europeans (or even certain tribes of American Indians) had to learn slavery from anyone....
