Currently there is talk in Australia of starting up a system used in Europe, whereby you pay a yearly fee, then you can just pick up and ride one of a fleet of bikes when and where you want, then just leave it there - hopefully one will be there for your return journey...

Actually such systems have been around for ages, without the necessity of paying - unless you get caught...
