IrfanView worked on all pre-XP boxes - it is free and will show any graphic file, and play any sound file, as well as show simple text files (as a graphic file!). You can set up slide shows, and save them to files - even fire it up via a .BAT file linked to a shortcut, so you can set up several different slide shows.
