I think Gurney's comment may have been about the Great bit rather than the Britain bit. I don't know if I am right or not but it sort of makes sense and fits in with Teribus's notes about Brittany being formed by people leaving Britain. The Normans would then have been quite right in refering to Britain as 'Great' in the sense that is was the sire of Brittany. If it does work that way it answers a question that has puzzled me for years - Ie, where did the 'Great' bit come from?
