Thread Name: BS: GREAT Britain?
Subject: RE: BS: GREAT Britain?
Time line for the terms was:

The Romans, Britannica Maximus - to differentiate between the collective name for all the islands and the island that they settled - somewhere between 55AD and 146AD

Grande Bretagne - used to differentiate between the former Roman Britannica maximus and Brittany

The first use of the title Great Britain was at the coronation, at Westminster, of James VI of Scotland, as King James I of England. From the departure of the Romans up until 1603 the term "Great Britain" had never been used to describe the largest island in the group of islands collectively known as the British Isles.
