It seems to me that - in England - in the first few decades of the last century - quite a bit of easy piano music was published with a folkie bent. This was probably to do with influence of the Vaughan William national music trend. I am fond of the the compositions of Thomas Dunhill. Many of his easier pieces have a decided "folkie" feel with obvious influences including shanties.
