After 24 years in existence one of the most notorious prisons in the world gives way to the wrecking ball. The Maze was built in 1976 to replace Long Kesh internment camp huts. Minister David Hanson was on hand as the demolition started and quipped that, "this particular disposal of the past, should be one of my last acts as a direct rule minister."

It is proposed that the site will be used to build a new sports stadium. Some developers however in what must be the strangest twists of irony, on a site where 10 men died on hunger strike, wanted to build an Asda Supermarket.
