I uninstalled and re-installed Get Mail just to see if I ran into the same problem as you. Mine worked fine and found Thunderbird as my default. Sounds to me like you have a setting somewhere that points to Netscape as your default. You might give step 2 in my previous post.

I opened Firefox, opened the downloaded file, restarted Firefox and all was fine.
