You're so nice, meself!

OK - all apes have these nice opposable thumbs. They just have too many of them. When we lost our opposable toes and stood up, we liberated our hands to be exapted into tool users instead of locomotors, AND accidentally changed the shape of our throats so that later, when we'd evolved language, we could exapt the larynx and evolve speech.
