Her dad's plane disappeared from radar somewhere over Ohio, as I recall. I'm sure she wanted to believe he was a hero, and he may have been, but his plane didn't make it to D.C. Either he was part of the operation, or he was killed on 9/11 (and not in the way we've been told). The odds are pretty long that she should've died in the way she did.
