I ran the DOSBox on my XP/Pro system, which is NTFS (well mostly - I have one FAT partition for use with Linux dual boot) and it was fine. I only tried it with one file but it did work.
I'm sure that somewhere on my browsing travels I've seen something that simulated the DOS speaker, but on a quick look I couldn't find it.
