I did used to make a point of having the Canada Customs registration card for each instrument of any value that I took into the States--just to avoid the very remote possibility of hassles on the way back to Canada. A good practice. Failing that, keep the original bill of sale and/or repair receipts that show you had the instrument long before you entered the US.
