I Grieve

I grieve for the
   Land of my Heart
To which I have never been;
For my ancestors
   Never known;
For my dancing Self
   Who went within.

I grieve for our early home
   Its magic of empty prairie,
Its landscape of searing
   Loneliness and bright promise,
Its ferocity of Nature and
   Beauty of quietude.

I grieve for youthful passion;
Though its embers burn steadily,
Now, compassion feeds the flames.
