Not sure what causes hiccups, but a medico once told me that anyone can stop hiccups by increasing the levels of CO2 in their bloodstream. This can be done by a) drinking a tall glass of water, b) holding your breath, c) breathing into a paper bag, d) any of a number of other home remedies. The thing that works for me every time is to expel as much air as I can from my lungs and then hold back on breathing in for as long as I can. It never fails to cure my hiccups. Good luck.
