I'm an inveterate door-holder and seat-offerer, and I've never had a hostile or rude response. I once, back in the '70s, saw a young woman make a straight-laced guy uncomfortable by pointedly refusing to exit an elevator until AFTER him. That was the only time I ever saw anything like that.
