The absolute ultimate folk music experiences in San Francisco are the chantey sing at Hyde Street Pier on the first Saturday of the month, and the song circle at Faith Petric's house at 885 Clayton (8 PM every other Friday - May 11 and May 25 should be the dates in May.

Now, if you like Dixieland, you may want to make a side trip to Sacramento for the The 34th Annual Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, May 25th - 28th. You may not be able to find lodging in Sacramento that weekend, but it's less than a two-hour drive from San Francisco. I think this is the largest Dixieland festival west of the Mississippi.
