I'm afraid that putting in poison ivy would backfire--the stuff gets me bad. Chiggars are unpleasant, but the grass isn't tall enough for them to provide much threat.

Maybe a hedge of berberus along the front and walkway. People will only push through that stuff once. But it also will block the view of the flowers once it gets very big.
