I'm afraid Butcher Beeching did get the line THROUGH Whitby, Betsy. When I was in short trousers, our church choir used to spend a couple of weeks at a Christian camp in Staithes - and we got there on a train from Scarborough via Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby and Hinderwell and other places with exotic names. An amazing route which didn't exactly hug the coast, but seemed to flirt with it!
