Why then all this verse of vanities?
Pride in achievements is valid, true,
But what has that to do with you?
If it were good - but it is not,
And pride in a brimming chamber pot
Full of turds and piss is fine for babies
Who have no more ambition, maybe.
But as an adult, and civilised,
Who's viewed the world through his own eyes -
Read your verse as if you'd never seen it
And think: Does it praise the thing described, or demean it?
