If he shot someone in self-defense, would they take all of this time to investigate all around the house? Maybe he was already in their radar and this was a chance to check him out as well as check out his story?

I was going to suggest you look for public coroner records, but since he only injured the other man, that won't be necessary (which is a good thing!)

We have a neighbor two doors up who seems to have a lot of small-time rackets going. The back yard is filled with junk, and people come and go for brief visits day and night. Sure looks like drugs and contraband to us, but he's still in there. His father (divorced from the first wife) is doing life for murdering his ex-girl friend's girl friend and stuffing her body in a barrel on his back porch.
