Now that the hook is set, look at http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html and notice Figure 6: CEOs' pay as a multiple of the average worker's pay and Figure 7: CEOs' average pay, production workers' average pay, the S&P 500 Index, corporate profits, and the federal minimum wage, 1990-2005 (all figures adjusted for inflation). You will see that it made an incredible increase of 400$ between 1994 and 2000. It topped out right about at the beginning of 2000. It has not reached that level since.
