There's a story in our family that my Great Grandfather Joe Hansell founded the team. He worked at the Thames Iron Works as a boilermaker and organized a team from the apprentices there.

As most of the apprentices had been to St. Luke's School, the team was originally called "St. Luke's Juveniles". Later they changed the name to "Thames Iron Works", which eventually became "West Ham United".
