Thread Name: Old Scottish songs at Google Book Search
Subject: RE: Old Scottish songs at Google Book Search
That's a distinct possibility, Jim. It hadn't occurred to me as an explanation because I have no reason to think that the book isn't well out of copyright in the UK, too; as, so far as I know, are all those in your list for which I got no results beyond a listing or 'snippet view'. Perhaps Google hasn't actually checked the details and is just being careful. The fact that George, in Canada, gets the same results that I do might suggest that.

How annoying. Although print copies of most of the 'missing' books can be picked up reasonably cheaply, and many are just verse anthologies without any particularly useful material in them from my point of view, I need to refer to so many books at times that it's useful not to have to find money for them all. Perhaps I should try contacting Google for any comments they may have; though I rather doubt that I would get anything other than a general reply that won't address the specifics.

I originally tried to access the Farquhar Graham some time ago, but gave up, assuming that there was no text available. Resuming my efforts when you posted your list here, I found that most (though not all, as I mentioned) of the links led, for me, to references or 'snippets' only. Naturally I assumed that that was the case generally (it evidently is for UK and Canadian users, at any rate), though obviously I was wrong about that; so my apologies for doubting you.

I have wasted several hours now examining source codes and all manner of stuff; it is time to assume that Jim is right, and give up. I suppose that any further lists should include a note to the effect that much of the material is restricted to users in the USA.

PS: Thanks to Bill for trying to help on access; and for putting up the pdf in 'neutral territory', where I had no problem getting hold of it. The main interest of this particular book, from my point of view, lies in the historical notes attached to the songs.
