Thread Name: Today is our Independence day (Iceland)
Subject: Tune Add: LOFSÖNGUR / ICELANDIC NATIONAL ANTHEM
The tune for the Icelandic national anthem was composed in Edinburgh. There's a blue plaque on the wall of the building where it was written. It dates from 1874 when Iceland first got its own constitution giving the Althing legislative powers within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Words by the Rev Matthias Jochumsson (1835-1920) Music by Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson (1847-1926). The words, referring to "Iceland's thousand years", mark the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of Iceland by Ingolf Arnason.
