"Had DVDs even been invented while Win98 was still around among the living?"
Try Win95... :-P
With Win98SE, I never heard of any way of locking out 'folders as private or shared' on a single user machine.
There's a 'aacenc32.dll.cab' in the Common Files/AudioPlugins dir on the CD. So the CD install couldn't find it... !!! I have all sorts of little goodies (unfortunately mostly win9x specific) that can peek inside all sorts of files and read them - will have to start building up my Linux set now... :-) remember the old disk sector editors? :-)

I'm tempted if I don;t hear anything back other than 'upgrade offers' to just bung the file in the WIN/SYSTEM area where it can be found and try again... but if it plays that game with all the cab files, it could be tedious...
"If files on the CD are compressed" etc stuff
Yeah, well I don't object to being taken by the hand as a beginner occasionally, cause I am one of those eccentric bastards who DO find it useful to RTFM from time to time...
But most of the obvious stuff has been looked at...
except that the stupid SW wants to try to WRITE to the CD to create stuff - I HAVE found programs that stupid before, and some only recently... - maybe they are set up to work only from a net connection with write access!!!...
I have a "DRIVE:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins" which is not drive C - for various technical reasons - which you should be able to guess if you're as good as you think :-P - but it has no files - I do have a "C:\Program Files\Common Files\" - unless Nero is NOT using the default lookup to find where that dir is - writing 'brum code' that does not follow standards is nothing new...
BTW, one of the questions that Nero ask is "What Optical drive SW currently is, or could ever have been installed on the PC?" - to which of course, I replied "Get REAL!" :-) (subtle techie joke that one!) hehehehe!
