Barrie was a big human being, in every possible way, and made a big impact on most who met him. I will miss his humour, his sharp mind, his ability to entertain and amuse, his omnivorous intellect, his generous hospitality and willingness to help others and perhaps most importantly his ability to tell a good story. I will miss bumping into him in the local supermarket where two increasingly decrepit and long-haired reprobates would chew the fat. I will miss his friendship, advice and his being there, because when thing went pear shaped one could rely on Barrie. He was my friend for 37 years and luckily I still owe him a a 50cl bottle of single malt from an interesting distillery. As he said of another mutual friend, "another good-un gone ..." the likes of which etc.
