Agreed, meself; I went through the same reaction sequence starting with the initial post and then the follow-throughs.
I guess when I think about "telling a funny story about war" I get flashbacks to "Hogan's Heroes", with their whimsical adventures in the German stalag, and my cringe relex may jump the gun a little.
