"The first mouse gets the scent, but the second mouse gets the cheese."

It's a reference to mice and mouse traps. The first mouse scents the cheese that the trap is baited with, but is killed by the trap and the second mouse then makes off with the cheese because the first mouse, who scented the cheese, ran in to take it and is now dead because the first mouse sprang the trap, which killed him or her, and that allowed the second mouse to take the cheese bait and eat it safely.

It's one of them Zen colons or whatever they call 'em.
