In the eary 1970s, the Midland Hotel in Manchester was refurbished, and a new posh bar extension added. They wanted a name that would reflect its location, and also its nature as an annexe. The hotel being by a canal, they chose the name of the unpowered boat towed by the powered narrow boat- and called it the Butty Bar. Imagine their surprise when Mancunians came in at lunchtime expecting bacon butties...
