I set the beacon that summoned Them, because I wanted to test "Shane" and see if he had the fortitude and guts to go through with his resolution of ask for the hand (and other parts) of Jennifer Dana. Would he complete the task he set for himself, even through the greatest difficulties? Was he, in other words, a real man?

So far, "Shane" has failed. I can only offer him the words of Robert Browning:
