Thread Name: Tintin In The Congo
Subject: RE: Tintin In The Congo
The guy WAS a fascist for a time - a supporter of the pro-Nazi Belgian Rexists - and for him to write a racist book about the Congo in the 1930s was like someone writing Holocaust denial literature in the 60s. Far more Congolese died under the Leopoldian System than Jews under the Nazis.

It seems he later changed his mind, and perhaps even willingly. But his Congo book is racist propaganda up there with The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and to reprint it *without any comment on its historical context* is something only a white supremacist publisher would try.

E.D. Morel's "The Black Man's Burden" and Neal Ascherson's "The King Incorporated" will tell you what the Belgian regime in the Congo was like.
