Faced with the same problem, I got hold of some large sheets of plastic pan scourer, cut some insoles for my trainers, and wore them without socks. Not all day, I didn't want raw flesh on the soles of my feet, but for the evenings. I now have feet like the mother's hands in the Fairy advert.
