Humane traps are great! Until you get a creature who works out how to beat them! We had a hamster who was always escaping, so we got some mammal traps as a way of recapturing her when she went under the floorboards. All went well the first two times it happened and Tully was captured speedly and safely. The third time (This was the houdini of the hamster world, she escaped about once a month!) the trap was tripped, and empty, as in none of the bait was left in! Uh-Oh we thought, we've got mice! No, the traps were consistantly emptied and we finally caught the hamster by pure luck. So we put baited trap on table, and hamster down next to it. She looks at the trap, sniffs the enterance and wriggles inside leaving small, fat furry bottom outside. From the inside are busy sounds of hamster removing as much grub as possible and then she wriggled out, having emptied the trap and left it shut behind her. She aquired a few new names after that, and her cage acquired a padlock (which made no difference at all!).
I'm guessing Racoons are probably smarter than hamsters so they will inevitably figure out a way of beating the system!
