Dorothy Parker was a marvelous 20th century US writer known for her wit -- often dark, often acerbic, always outspoken -- and superb command of the language. Her Wikipedia bio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Parker) is a good start. Here are some notable quotes of hers: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Parker). And a couple more:

You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think.

                                – Dorothy Parker (attrib)

Résumé

Razors pain you,
Rivers are damp,
Acids stain you,
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful,
Nooses give,
Gas smells awful.
You might as well live.

                                – Dorothy Parker, Enough Rope (1926)
