Of course every school kids can tie a bowline, so what does this mean?

Well a sailor ties a bowline quite differently to a landlubber.

A landlubber will twist a loop into the rope, poke the end through, wrap it 'round the back and poke it back through the loop.

Whereas a sailor will hold the bight in his left hand, lay the (bitter) end across it and twist the loop around the rope in one movement. Then all he has to do is wrap the end 'round and back through the loop.
