Innocent use of a sexually charged word or phrase is common, of course. (I remember the first time I was laughed at for saying, "I got a bang out of that." And I was in my 20s.)

Spunky, however, in the US has been a legitimate word for generations. One is as likely to use it in connection with a mouthy or brave 2 year old as an 80 year old.
