Very timely thread!

This past weekend, my family went with some friends to a local country fair, primarily to see Robinson's Racing Pigs (do a Google---or even better, a Google image---search: piglets running obstacle courses, 'nuff said!). Anyway, the pigs were awesome, and we had loads of fun looking at the prize-winning cattle, poultry and assorted vegetable matter, the kids went on rides, etc. Inevitably, the children became hungry during the course of the afternoon...after much searching for something evenly remotely nutritious, we finally managed to locate a booth that offered grilled chicken and/or veggies in a pita pocket, but it was NOT easy.

Now, I'm intelligent enough to know that the comestibles at such events are not necessarily (!) designed for the health conscious, and I'm as happy as the next person to choke down the occasional fried dough in the spirit of the occasion, but I was literally appalled at the stuff being sold as "food," with little or no alternative. Besides the fact that almost everything was deep-fried, it was almost impossible for the several vegetarians (some of whom are children) in our group to find anything to eat, besides ice cream or the above-mentioned fried dough. Obviously, the solution is to pack a picnic, eat lunch and then get some ice cream (much cheaper, too!), but it really was an eye-opener to see so many people making an entire day's diet of this stuff; unfortunately, those statistics aren't all that surprising...
