Two years ago, one of my sons gave me a Spike Jones reissue CD, including "Der Fuhrer's Face" among a long list of musical mischief. Spike Jones was a fixture in the forties and early fifties, inspiring Weird Al, in later years, to carry the torch of musical parody and farce. Jones was a very accomplished musician and composer who happened on a "gimmick" that gave him a whole new audience. His musicians were all first rate and included specialists in various vocal tricks, such as hiccupping on key, gargling entire songs, etc. He used all sorts of sound effects, the starter's pistol being one of his favorites. It was inspired madness, badly needed during troubled times. He fell out of favor in the fifties, after hosting an early television show, but the memory lingers yet. Great fun!
