My heart is heavy today. There's nothing anybody can do, but at least I can tell my mudcat buddies about it.

Yesterday the bodies of Lindsey and Sam Porter were identified. Lindsay and Sam (who were ages 8 and 7 when they disappeared) have been missing since June, 2004, and Kansas City has been looking for them. Sometimes I would have this daydream that a lost child would wander down my street and I would say, "Are you Sam? Are you Lindsay?" and the answer would be "Yes."

When I see their pictures, I feel the urge to take them in my arms and hold them safe. Impossible!

It cannot be. Lindsay and Sam were killed by their father and buried in thick woods on a river floodplain. Their father, Dan Porter, went to prison for abducting them, and he took delight in tormenting his ex-wife about his refusal say what he had done with them.

Here's what a friend of the family said about Dan Porter -

"I know he seems like a monster, but I just wish you could have seen him in action earlier in life. He was a whole other person who had a good outlook on life and a fairly good future until he got caught up in the drug thing and everything went terribly wrong from there.

It was something he seemed to be able to control until at some point he lost it, the drugs took over his mind and he simply melted down. And I'm sure the dramatic and horrific childhood he had didn't help matters at all."

I'm going to remember all this for the next person who talks about 'recreationsl drugs' or how drug-use is a 'victimless crime.'
