One thing that would help is if certain people would stop glamourizing drugs. For example, referring to "Ecstasy" (what a weasel-word name for a brain poison) as a designer drug. As if illegal drugs have trained inventors and quality control.
Another thing is when the media talk about a celebrity returning from drug rehab, as if the person is all better now, ready to be just as talented, rich and famous as ever. Not likely!
Another thing is when the paper says something like "the police discovered cocaine and heroine worth $500,000 on the street." The stuff isn't worth anything! It's junk.
Here is Missouri we have a lot of problems with meth and meth labs. (Meth lab! That's another one. A slummy house with a bunch of bums in it!) It was years before the media got around to mentioning the neglected children they find in meth houses, some of them with lungs burned by chemicals.
Dan Porter, the father in this case, seems to have had a terrible childhood. God knows what demons he faced, but why couldn't he turn to someone legit for help, instead of to drugs? Unfortunately, drug dealers seem to have a way of zeroing in on people like him.
The woods where he buried his kids was a place where he hunted deer. Now he's living in a cell and wants a subscription to National Geographic. He gave up his freedom for a chemical, but the people who need to be warned by his story will probably never hear it.
I couldn't sleep last night with all this running through my head. So I got up at 5 am and played my dulcimer. My cat sat on a nearby chair, listening. Cats are too smart to do illegal drugs.
