Never heard of The Tooth Rat, tho' I look forward to terrifying friends' children with tales of the critter; with regard to Australian folklore re. Rats, Brendan Behan (1950s/early 1960s) frequently used the expression "cute as a shithouse rat", where "cute" has the same sense as in Rowan's posting. Love the idea of a rat with a gold tooth.
