A friend of mine from Devon, who's also a banjo player, has put frets on his fiddle, and it's definitely improved his intonation. I suspect it's made him addicted to the frets, so he'd have difficulty playing another fiddle. He seems to manage slides ok - they're obviously not as clean as a fretless would be, but his Old Time fiddling sounds fine.
