Dick, as far as I can tell, the main reason for friction pegs is the inability of violin-makers (and violinists, to be fair) to imagine that improvement on Stradivarius is possible. :-(

Re fretting a violin, you could maybe try the old-fashioned fretting method of tying gut strings round the neck as a fret. No need for a new instrument.
