It sounds as if he's gotten out of a situation that he couldn't deal with, and is trying to mend fences the best way he knows how (which may not be saying much).

The charitable view is that he was in a living situation that he couldn't handle, and he was venting his anger at the situation, and you just happened to be in the way.
