Ned Sherrin and Caryl Brahms wrote a TV play(it might have been on stage as well, not sure) about Benbow. Donald Wolfitt(sp?), that tremendous over-the-top actor of the old school, was Benbow. Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor stood on the poopdeck/focsle/quarter deck/by the steering wheel (it was a long time ago, I forget) and commented on the action in song.Probably while buckets of water were thrown over them. Great stuff. Whether the BBC still have tapes of the play, I know not. At a guess, knowing their history in this area, they probably junked it! Ned Sherrin was a great supporter of folksong and folkies on stage screen and radio, in the old days before the "folk scene" ghettoised itself into the current world of Cambriadge, Celtic Connections and Mike harding. Ned Sherrin believed in embedding music deeply in life, and I remember him very very fondly for it.
