Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.

So far, the Universe is winning.

We had one colleague who, after spilling tea down his shirt, rinsed it under the tap and tried to dry it in the microwave, then wondered why the fire alarms went off.

He denied all knowledge when asked later, until he was confronted with a melted piece of plastic that had formerly been his identity badge, pinned to the shirt he'd been trying to dry in the microwave.

He no longer works with us.
